Bout of Books Wrap Up

Bout of Books

Bout of Books 20 ended yesterday! Here are my totals:

32498122Pages Read: 367
Books Completed: 1
I've had Bout of Books weeks where I've read 1000+ pages, so I'm feeling like a bit of a failure here....I did finish The Identicals by Elin Hilderbrand, and I really loved it! Hers have been hit or miss with me lately and I'm happy this was a good one for me!
Bout of Books 21 will be January 8-14th, 2018.
Happy Reading, my friends!

Review: Fitness Junkie

Title: Fitness Junkie
33358197Author: Lucy Sykes, Jo Piazza
304 pages, published July 2017

From Goodreads:

When Janey Sweet, CEO of a couture wedding dress company, is photographed in the front row of a fashion show eating a bruffin--the delicious lovechild of a brioche and a muffin--her best friend and business partner, Beau, gives her an ultimatum: Lose thirty pounds or lose your job. Sure, Janey has gained some weight since her divorce, and no, her beautifully cut trousers don't fit like they used to, so Janey throws herself headlong into the world of the fitness revolution, signing up for a shockingly expensive workout pass, baring it all for Free the Nipple yoga, sweating through boot camp classes run by Sri Lankan militants and spinning to the screams of a Lycra-clad instructor with rage issues. At a juice shop she meets Jacob, a cute young guy who takes her dumpster-diving outside Whole Foods on their first date. At a shaman's tea ceremony she meets Hugh, a silver fox who holds her hand through an ayahuasca hallucination And at a secret exercise studio Janey meets Sara Strong, the wildly popular workout guru whose special dance routine has starlets and wealthy women flocking to her for results that seem too good to be true. As Janey eschews delicious carbs, pays thousands of dollars to charlatans, and is harassed by her very own fitness bracelet, she can't help but wonder: Did she really need to lose weight in the first place? A hilarious send-up of the health and wellness industry, Fitness Junkie is a glorious romp through the absurd landscape of our weight-obsessed culture.

I was drawn to this book because I consider myself a bit of a fitness junkie, so I couldn't resist reading it. I was so glad I read it because the book was absolutely hilarious!! I was literally laughing out loud so many times during this book. The authors poke fun at so many real life things ("fit wands", juice bars, diet crazes, workout fads) in a delightfully funny way.
Don't start reading this book expecting something serious--though it's funny, sometimes it's over the top exaggerated funny (free the nipple yoga?!) but in the end, through all the ridiculousness, there are some good, heartfelt, serious  emotional issues tackled by Janey and the other characters. I loved Janey as a character--if you look beyond the satire in the book, Janey does have quite the journey--and not just her weight.  If you need to escape from everything and laugh--this book is for you.
Happy Reading!

Review: The Good Widow

32604384Title: The Good Widow
Authors: Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke
290 pages, published June 2017

Note: I received this book from NeGalley to facilitate my review. I received no other compensation, and all opinions are my own.

From Goodreads:

Elementary school teacher Jacqueline “Jacks” Morales’s marriage was far from perfect, but even in its ups and downs it was predictable, familiar. Or at least she thought it was…until two police officers showed up at her door with devastating news. Her husband of eight years, the one who should have been on a business trip to Kansas, had suffered a fatal car accident in Hawaii. And he wasn’t alone. For Jacks, laying her husband to rest was hard. But it was even harder to think that his final moments belonged to another woman—one who had left behind her own grieving and bewildered fiancĂ©. Nick, just as blindsided by the affair, wants answers. So he suggests that he and Jacks search for the truth together, retracing the doomed lovers’ last days in paradise.

Now, following the twisting path of that fateful road, Jacks is learning that nothing is ever as it seems. Not her marriage. Not her husband. And most certainly not his death...

WOW. That was my first thought after finishing this fantastic book! I've loved Liz and Lisa's other books, but this one was above and beyond! I read this book over a business trip and it was so hard to put down because I was itching to know what happened next.  When you're about three quarters of the way through the book, you think you have it all figured out--how it's going to end, what's going on. And then, the plot twist smacks you in the face! It's such an unexpected twist and so well written and I loved the element of surprise! It's not too often a plot twist like that is so surprising--I certainly didn't see it coming!
Of course, I loved the Hawaiian setting in the book and it was clear Liz and Lisa knew the area too, to make the book more real. I love Jacks as a character and my heart hurt for her as she moved through the grieving process. I LOVE this new genre for Liz and Lisa and hope they keep writing this style of book! This is my favorite of theirs so far but I recommend all their novels.
Happy Reading!

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

This is a weekly meme hosted by Kathryn @ The Book Date.
If you're still reading my blog...THANK YOU! I have just been so crazy busy this summer and just haven't had time for blogging. Since April, my husband and I  have celebrated three weddings of three very special couples, gone on a business trip each, gone to Hawaii, AND sold our first home and bought our dream home! We just got back from our most recent wedding trip to Casper, Wyoming last night! If you follow my instagram you saw the pictures of our road trip and the beautiful wedding!
Now, all our travels are done for the summer and we can settle into normal life! For me this means more reading, blogging, and yoga! Thank you for still reading! I'll be back to more frequent posting...I promise!
